Stell of SB19 shares process behind debut solo single 'Room'

Stell’s debut solo single “Room” is receiving a lot of love so far, and for great reasons.

Best known as a balladeer to both A’TIN and casual listeners thanks to his heavenly voice, Stell’s danceable debut was a welcome surprise.

The funky track has a lot of artistry behind it, which according to Stell, is thanks to his fellow SB19 member Pablo.

During the single’s launch in San Juan City on Friday, Stell revealed that the band’s leader actually offered to create a song for him.

“Then he asked me anong sound ‘yung gusto ko,” Stell told members of the press and lucky A’TIN who attended.

“I know myself po na I’m into this kind of sound na very ‘yung Michael Jackson and Bruno Mars, but I want to incorporate ‘yung medyo theatrical and musical na genre po. So I think dun po siya umiikot kaya naging ganun po ‘yung sound ni ‘Room,’” the singer said.

Stell added that it was Pablo who wrote the lyrics of “Room,” and his brother Josue helped out in producing the beat that ended up being the song’s baseline.

The artist added that although Pablo was the mastermind behind the song, he wanted to give his own personal message.

For Stell, the whole concept of his “Room” is a place where “I can be myself, where I can be confident. And in this room, I can do everything that I want without hesitations.”

He added, “I can do a lot of things na hindi na pinagiisipan kung ano ‘yung sasabihin ng ibang tao. I think of myself more rather than thinking of other people, na kung ano ‘yung magiging perception nila about me. Wala na ‘kong pakealam sa judgment nila basta ako po masaya ako, and masaya po ‘yung mga taong naniniwala po sa ‘kin.”

Stell also said that “Room” shows how he is still currently exploring his personal sound, but feels that he wouldn’t move too far away from the theatrical genre for his possible releases.

Stell is set to release his debut EP with all original songs this August, and is all set to go on a nationwide tour.

“Room” dropped on Friday along with a theatrical music video directed by fellow member Justin De Dios. Stell is the final member of SB19 to drop solo music.

On June 16, which is also Stell’s 29th birthday, he will be making the TV debut of “Room” on “All Out Sundays” and will be a guest on “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho.”

Stell and Julie Anne San Jose will be holding a two-night concert in July.

He is also set to be a judge on “The Voice Kids” on GMA-7. —JCB, GMA Integrated News
