7 Jin and BTS songs to listen to ahead of his military discharge

7 Jin and BTS songs to listen to ahead of his military discharge

Just one more sleep, ARMYs!

After 18 long months, Jin of BTS is set to be discharged from the South Korean military on Wednesday, June 12, and a great way to celebrate his return is to stream his and his group's music.

As a soloist, Jin so far has only a handful of songs in his name, all of which deserve a listen, but he shines even in group songs.

Here are seven songs to listen to as we prepare for Jin's return (and likely, his upcoming solo album):

"The Astronaut"

First on the list is Jin's solo debut single "The Astronaut," co-written by none other than Coldplay.

The song is a see-you-later gift from Jin to his fans, released prior to his enlistment in the South Korean military in late 2022.

It was his first official project as a solo artist, and it did not disappoint, topping charts and raking in millions of views with its cinematic music video. Jin also made waves with his first live performance of "The Astronaut" at Coldplay's Argentina stadium concert, broadcast in cinemas all over the world.

"Super Tuna"

It's party time, and what better song to jam to than "Super Tuna"? A gift for ARMYs on his birthday in 2021, the song is inspired by Jin's love for fishing. In fact, he actually wrote it while he was fishing with BigHit Music producer BUMZU.

The track is no doubt unserious, and Jin expressed slight horror when he learned it went viral following its release, but what can we do if it's a bop?

"Awake"

"The Astronaut" might be Jin's official solo debut, but that doesn't mean he never dabbled in solo work.

One of the earliest pieces he'd ever written is "Awake," an emotional song delving into his insecurities — but also his determination to keep moving forward.

"Maybe I can't touch the sky," he sings. "Still, I want to stretch my hand out, I want to run, just a bit more."

The track is included in BTS' second studio album, the iconic "Wings" (2016).

"Epiphany"

If "Awake" made you sad, don't worry, "Epiphany" will heal you.

The song is an anthem for self-love, with the chorus prompting fans to sing, "I'm the one I should love in this world."

Sung wholly by Jin, the track is in BTS' 2018 compilation album "Love Yourself: Answer."

"Magic Shop"

Real ARMYs know that the doors of the magic shop are forever open.

BTS dedicates "Magic Shop" to their fans, as a means to comfort them when they're feeling sad, alienated, and down on themselves. They encourage listeners to open a door within their hearts, and head into a place of safety, the magic shop.

All seven members of BTS are in the track, but the vocal line, which includes Jin, shines. The song is part of BTS' album "Love Yourself: Tear," released in 2018.

"We Are Bulletproof: The Eternal"

BTS looks back on their journey in this song, and honors the fans who stuck with them through thick and thin.

While it was released way before the members enlisted — specifically, in 2020 as part of their fourth studio album "Map of the Soul: 7" — the song is timeless, and now ARMYs can sing this knowing they survived a heartbreaking 2022 Festa Dinner, a hiatus, and at least one member's military service.

Six more to go!

"Spring Day"

Jin is the first BTS member to return from the military, and for fans, it feels akin to the coming of spring after a long winter.

No song depicts that feeling better than the fan favorite "Spring Day," released in 2017 as part of BTS' album "You Never Walk Alone." It is a song full of longing and an eagerness to see someone again — a very timely listen, we'd say.

The best part is Jin's angelic vocals in the end, singing, "Past the edge of cold winter, until the spring day comes again, until the flowers bloom, please stay there a while longer."

BONUS: "Take Two"

"Take Two" is another song gifted by BTS to fans in the midst of their military service, in time for their 10th anniversary. A laidback track, we hear Jin loud and clear, singing, "Can't you see the 'take two' stories unfolding just for you?"

While it probably means to reference BTS's "Chapter 2" — that is, their group hiatus and solo era as the members each enlist in the military — it can also mean another shot at things.

With Jin back, it's time for ARMYs to reassemble at the magic shop for the continuation of their journey with BTS. —JCB/GMA Integrated News
