Pickleball: Stay active with this hybrid of tennis, badminton and ping pong
If you're looking for a hobby that can help you stay active, pickleball is one of the racket sports in vogue these days.
According to Martin Javier's Game Changer segment on "24 Oras," Monday, pickleball is a hybrid of tennis, badminton, and ping pong.
It is played on a smaller court compared to tennis, making it less physically demanding for its enthusiasts. The racket is a solid paddle, while the ball is made of plastic and has holes.
"It's easy to understand. Kahit sino puwede maglaro nito beginner man o meydo may edad man," said Czarina Arevalo, a five-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist for tennis and now a coach for the team and other racket sports.
Coach Czarina demonstrated the mechanics of serving in pickleball, which differs from other racket sports.
"When you serve you have to serve below your waist," she said.
She also explained that there is a "kitchen" or non-volley zone in the court, where you are not allowed to make a smash.
Due to popular demand, the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City opened three courts in November and four more followed last April as more people get into the sport.
