'Bridgerton' Season 3: Filipino actors debut in the series as Lord Basilio and Lord Barnell
The latest season of “Bridgerton” is finally streaming on Netflix!
If you've seen the first episodes, then you've probably been introduced to Lord Basilio and Lord Barnell, characters played by Filipino actors James Bradwell and Martin Sarreal.
According to James’ Instagram post, he was first offered the role under a different name of East Asian heritage.
“I wondered whether there was an opportunity to rechristen my Lord with a name representative of my own heritage,” he said. “Feeling emboldened to reach out to production, I was met with an enthusiastic response welcoming and encouraging my input.”
James suggested a number of Filipino surnames, and they went with Basilio.
“Most importantly to me in this exchange was that I was made to feel like a collaborator on my role, not a beggar at the door as these conversations can sometimes feel in this industry,” he said.
On his account, Martin said that he had “loads of fun stepping into Lord Barnell’s shoes.”
“Made some great, new pals on this and got to reconnect with some old ones,” he said, also tagging his fellow Filipino in his post.
"Bridgerton" swept everyone off its feet in 2020 and set a Netflix record of 82 million viewers.
Just a few months after it was renewed for a second season, news came that "Bridgerton" was also renewed for a third and a fourth season.
