'Shogun': Hiroyuki Sanada shares how he made Japanese culture feel 'authentic' in the series

“Shogun” is already making waves following its release, debuting a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hiroyuki Sanada, the historical drama series producer who also plays the powerful Lord Yoshii Toranaga, sat down for an interview with GMA Network broadcaster Lyn Ching, and talked about how he wanted to portray Japanese culture as "accurate as possible."

"Sometimes, you know, misunderstandings, incorrect... so I wanted to correct everything in this show," he said.

Sanada hired a Japanese crew as specialists for the series, particularly in the samurai department where the wigs, costumes, props, gestures — every department “had a consultant, the Japanese eyes on set.”

The producer also gave props to the young actors.

“They’re brave to jump into [their] first time [in] Western style of shooting in another country. So I wanted to pick up their best performance everyday,” he said.

He added, “Some of them got great performance, and [when] all the producers and directors say ‘this is it,’ I was like, ‘yes!’”

Overall, the set was a happy one, and Sanada "felt happiness as a producer every day."

“Shogun” is set in Japan in 1600. It follows Lord Yoshii Toranaga who fights for his life against his enemies from the Council of Regents. A mysterious European ship is found in a nearby fishing village, and Lord Toranaga discovers secrets that could defeat his enemies.

The first two episodes of “Shogun” were released on February 27 on Hulu and FX, with new episodes dropping weekly. The show is also available to watch on Disney+. —Nika Roque/JCB/LA, GMA Integrated News
