5 romance anime on Netflix for your kilig fix

Do you have a Valentine’s Day hangover? Are you single longing for The One? Coming off a breakup and hoping to believe in love again? If you need a kilig fix this love month, we got you!

Romance anime is one definite source of that warm giddy feeling we all crave from time to time. From romantic comedies to slice of life, there are plenty of variations for different tastes, but they all deliver stories that will touch your heart.

Here are five anime titles currently streaming on Netflix for your romance needs.

1. Horimiya

Everyone has an “outside” face and an “inside” face – this is the story of “Horimiya,” a high school romance between popular girl Hori and anti-social boy Miyamura. When they unexpectedly meet outside of school, they see each other’s real selves for the first time and begin to fall in love.

Originally a web comic, it was adapted into a manga in 2011 and then into anime ten years later. The anime series had an interesting storytelling style – it skipped all events typically found in shoujo anime like sports festival and the school trip, and instead focused on Hori and Miyamura’s everyday life.

Last year, a second season of sorts, “Horimiya: Pieces” adapted all these missing moments from the anime.

2. Kimi ni Todoke

“Kimi ni Todoke” is the go-to anime if you’re after all the kilig feels. It’s another high school romance – this time it’s the boy who is the popular “crush ng bayan” type, while the girl is mistaken for someone who can see ghosts due to her resemblance to Sadako, the iconic horror character from “The Ring.”

Kazehaya is the greenest green flag there is, while our girl Sawako is a joy to watch as she slowly comes out of her shell and makes new friends. And of course, all the romantic moments will give you butterflies on your stomach. Ah, young love.

The great news: a third season is finally in the works after 12 years!

3. Skip and Loafer

“Skip and Loafer” follows Mitsumi, a smart promdi girl who moves to Tokyo to attend high school. When she gets lost in the train station on her first day, she gets helped by a carefree handsome boy named Shima to make it to their entrance ceremony.

Mitsumi makes an impression on Shima, and the two become friends. The anime follows them as they navigate high school – joining clubs, managing friendships, and experiencing crushes.

It’s a cute slice of life with a pinch of romance, a breathe of fresh air in shoujo anime.

4. Ouran High School Host Club

As the title suggests, “Ouran High School Host Club” follows a group of filthy rich boys who run a host club in a prestigious school. They spend their time entertaining the ladies with their charms, but their carefree days gets disrupted when honor student Haruhi wanders into their club room and accidentally breaks an exorbitantly expensive vase.

Thus begins the quintessential romantic comedy in anime. Haruhi is a girl, but the host club mistakes her for a boy when they first meet and absorb her into their group. The boys shortly realize the truth one by one, but they have Haruhi keep pretending to be a boy anyway – think of all the laughs!

"Ouran" is a reverse harem, but it also explores serious themes like gender, identity, and class. Definitely a must-watch classic.

5. Nana

If you want a more gritty romance between adults, “Nana” is the series for you. This 2006 anime follows two girls, both named Nana, who meet in Tokyo. One is a vocalist for a rock band, and the other is a girl who gets into a string of relationship troubles.

The two Nanas end up sharing an apartment and develop a close friendship. Nana the vocalist pursues a professional music career with her band, but she has her own relationship issues from her past. The other Nana, nicknamed Hachi, gets increasingly entangled in the band’s relationships as she follows their journey.

If you’re into anime music, the songs from the series is also guaranteed to make it to your playlist. And they’re available on Spotify!
