'Lisa Frankenstein's' screenwriter says Liza Soberano's character is her favorite
Liza Soberano recently made waves on social media for her first Hollywood role as Taffy in the upcoming coming-of-age film “Lisa Frankenstein.”
Apparently, her role didn’t only win the hearts of Filipino viewers but also the eye of the movie’s screenwriter Diablo Cody.
In an interview with Universal Pictures, the Oscar-winning screenwriter revealed that Taffy was her favorite character in the film.
According to Cody, Taffy is “a beacon of positivity.”
“She’s a beacon of positivity, and even when she’s unwittingly condescending or tone deaf, her intentions are always kind,” she said.
Cody also described Taffy as a protective sister to Lisa.
“Lisa resents Taffy because she’s effortlessly beautiful and popular, but Lisa eventually comes to realize that her ire is misdirected,” the screenwriter added.
Despite being popular, Taffy isn’t a mean girl, and according to Cody that’s what makes her character interesting.
“I felt that having Taffy be a standard ‘mean popular girl’ would be uninteresting. Most of the queen bees I’ve known were more complex than that,” she said.
Meanwhile, Liza said that she had an “instant connection with Taffy” and she was a “fun character to play.”
Earlier this January, the film released its trailer, featuring Liza in a cheerleader uniform.
Directed by Zelda Williams and written by Diablo Cody, "Lisa Frankenstein" is inspired by the gothic novel "Frankenstein" by English writer Mary Shelley.
The movie follows Lisa played by Kathryn Newton, a misunderstood teenager, and her high school crush played by Cole Sprouse, who happens to be a handsome corpse.
Distributed by Universal Pictures International, “Lisa Frankenstein” opens in cinemas on February 7, just in time for Valentine’s Day!
