Jo Koy responds to criticism of his Golden Globes hosting: 'I feel bad'

Jo Koy has responded to the criticism he received for his hosting of the Golden Globes.

While he made history as the first Filipino-American to host the prestigious ceremony, the comedian's jokes did not land well with an audience filled with Hollywood's A-listers and respectable personalities.

Jo Koy addressed the issue in an interview on “Good Morning America.”

“I'd be lying if [I said] it doesn't hurt,” he said on the program via video call. “I hit a like a little a moment there where I was just like, ‘ugh.’”

He added that hosting is “a tough game.”

“And yes, I am a stand-up comic, but that hosting, it's a different style. You know, it's not the same style,” he said.

“I feel bad, but hey, I gotta still say that I loved what I did,” he added.

Jo Koy said that one specific moment that stuck with him was when he joked about Taylor Swift, the Golden Globes, and the National Football League.

"It was a weird joke," he said.

“It was more on the NFL, you know what I mean," he added. "I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways and how, you know the Globes didn't have to do that. And so, it's more of a jab towards the NFL, you know, but I don't think it just didn’t come out that way.”

Asked if he would say yes to hosting the Globes again, the comedian said, “That's a tough gig, I'm not gonna lie. Like, I really love the art of stand-up. You know, it was cool that the opportunity came to me and hosting is just—it is a beast. And that's about it.”

“It was a moment that I'll always remember and you know, it's a tough room. It was a hard job, I'm not gonna lie,” he added.

Jo Koy said that he and the writers only had 10 days to write his monologue. He called the hosting gig a “crash course.”

He also said that preparations were challenging, but commended the team behind the show.

“I literally got the call and haven't slept since, just trying to write something, just to write what we had to write. And you know, the guys were great. Everyone was great.”

Agreeing that he sounded deflated, Jo Koy said, “I wanted to give a little bit more of me and it just felt… I felt a little short.”
