Here's the list of Gawad Urian nominees for 2023
The Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino has unveiled its nominees for the 2023 Gawad Urian awards in a Facebook video.
Held annually and now on its 46th edition, the top award-giving body celebrates the best in Philippine cinema.
Leading the nominees are “Blue Room” and “Leonor Will Never Die,” each receiving 10 nods.
“Blue Room” tells the story of rock band members who are stuck between the difficult choice of freedom or standing up for what they believe in.
It won five awards at the Cinemalaya Film Festival in 2022, including the Special Jury Award, Best Cinematography, and Best Production Design.
It is Ma-an Asuncion-Dagñalan’s debut film and she won Best Director at Cinemalaya. It was also named Best Foreign Film at LA Femme International Film Fest.
Meanwhile, “Leonor Will Never Die” is a psychological comedy-drama that follows Leonor, a retired filmmaker. After an accident leaves her in a coma, she is transported into her unfinished film.
The film won the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award: Innovative Spirit at the Sundance Film Festival and the Amplify Voices Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). It opened Cinemalaya in 2022 and is now streaming on Netflix.
Veteran actor Jaime Fabregas is this year’s recipient of the Natatanging Gawad Urian, the equivalent of a lifetime achievement award.
The Gawad Urian awards ceremony is happening on November 29 at the UP Film Institute.
