Rey Valera composed Sharon Cuneta's 'Mr. DJ' listening to raindrops
Rey Valera is one of the best Filipino songwriters ever, and apparently he takes inspiration for his craft from basically anything—even raindrops.
On Wednesday's episode of "Fast Talk With Boy Abunda," Rey shared the story of how he composed Sharon Cuneta's hit song "Mr. DJ."
Rey said thought about the song during his commute from work to his home in Bulacan on one rainy day.
"Noon naman wala akong sasakyan pa, nakikisakay lang ako sa jeep sa Monumento papuntang Meycauayan," he said.
With so many people taking the jeep, Rey said he had nowhere to sit inside the vehicle with the other passengers.
"Sumasakay ako doon sa, alam n'yo ba 'yung tapakan, doon ako umuupo eh paharap sa kalsada," he said.
While listening to the rain, Rey created the melody for "Mr. DJ" using the pattern he heard from the drops of water.
When he got off the jeep and arrived home, he began recording the song in a cassette tape.
Rey then submitted it to former senator Tito Sotto, who gave him the project of writing a song for Sharon. Tito immediately recognized the potential of the song.
And the rest, as they say, is history. Sharon became a bonafide recording star thanks to the song.
