Before you catch the highly-anticipated "Barbie" movie in Philippine cinemas starting today, here are five interesting facts about the fashion doll that inspired the live-adaptation film.

1. The first Barbie doll was released in 1959

The first ever Barbie doll was produced as a toy in 1959 by toy manufacturer Mattel Inc. Barbie was the brainchild of Ruth Handler, who co-founded Mattel Inc. She credited the idea to her daughter, who enjoyed playing with paper dolls of adult women instead of her baby dolls.

2. The first black Barbie doll was named Christie

Mattel Inc. produced the first black Barbie doll named Christie in 1968, nine years after the brand was launched as a children's toy. Since then, Christie was poised as an African-American friend of Barbie.

3. The bestselling Barbie of all time is Totally Hair Barbie

The bestselling Barbie of all time is Totally Hair Barbie, which debuted in 1992.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Totally Hair Barbie has sold more than 10 million dolls worldwide.

4. Barbie's real-life body measurement is 39-18-33

If Barbie is a real person, her body measurement is simply unrealistic. She stands 5'9" tall, has a 39" bust, an 18" waist, and a shoe size of 3.

5. As of 2023, there are 43 Barbie-inspired movies produced

As of this year, there are 43 movies produced inspired by Barbie, starting with "Barbie in the Nutcracker," released in 2001, up to the live-action film "Barbie," released in 2023.

The latest "Barbie" film was directed by Greta Gerwig, starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrara, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Dua Lipa, and Will Ferrell.

"Barbie" is now showing in Philippine cinemas after the MTRCB said it found no basis to ban "Barbie" in the Philippines over an alleged depiction of China's nine-dash-line map.
