Carla Abellana shares her favorite part about Mary Ann Armstrong in 'Voltes V: Legacy'

There’s lots to love about Carla Abellana’s character in “Voltes V: Legacy.”

The Kapuso star plays Mary Ann Armstrong, a scientist and the mother of the Voltes Team’s Steve, Big Bert, and Little Jon. Carla said it best when she described her character as “napaka serious, strict, intellectual,” but a loving mom to the three boys.

In an interview with GMA News Online, Carla said what she loves most about Mary Ann is that she's a stern disciplinarian.

“Although hindi naman lahat would agree diba [and would say], ‘ah, masyado naming strict, dapat loving ganyan, may reenforcing, [how] you raise your children, mga ganun. But really, I think 'yung sa kanya is tama lang,” Carla said in a virtual press conference.

“Unang una, because she's a single parent, umalis si Ned Armstrong ng planet Earth. She was forced to really take care of her children by herself so kailangan niya maging disciplinarian. Kailangan niya silang gabayan, kailangan niyang bantayan, kailangan niyang basically alagaan,” she added. “But then, she's also a scientist and she has so many other responsibilities.”

Carla said that despite Mary Ann’s strictness, she likes the balance of how the character gives her kids room to grow.

“Strict siya pero she doesn't smother her children,” she said. “Hinahayaan na lang din niya. They discover more about themselves, 'yung special abilities nila, kung ano 'yung gusto nilang i-pursue.”

Mary Ann would be hesitant to allow her kids to go on dangerous missions because their safety is her ultimate concern. However, she would also eventually give way and “let them grow up to be whoever they want to be kasi alam naman niyang wala sa control niya 'yun.”

She added, “Makikita dito, at the end of the day, may trust siya or she trusts her children. And of course, magdadasal siya. And then gagawin niya and the rest of the entire team na i-train sila, give them the best, you know, support and reinforcement.”

Eventually though, Mary Ann will let go of that control for the sake of Planet Earth.

Before its premiere on GMA Network, “Voltes V: Legacy: The Cinematic Experience” will exclusively be shown in SM Cinemas from April 19 to 25. This film will include material from the first three weeks of the series. —JCB, GMA Integrated News
