Did Chinese garter really come from China? Kuya Kim reveals the answer
Did Chinese garter really come from China?
On "24 Oras," Kuya Kim said that the popular street game indeed originated from China.
In China, it was called Chinese jump rope and dates back to the seventh century.
In the 1970s, kids in the Western hemisphere started playing it as well. In Germany, it was called gummitwist, and in the United Kingdom, it was called elastics.
Chinese garter is also played in the Philippines, usually with two people holding two ends of the garter. The players jump or cross without their feet getting caught in the garter.
"It improves our flexibility, 'yong coordination ng hand, ng feet, as well as noong eyes. Flexibility, endurance, as well as 'yong agility," said Dr. Wesson Espiritu, orthopedic and sports doctor, about the benefits of playing the game.
"I suggest you use a proper footwear, mas maganda kung naka-rubber shoes," he added.
There are different levels starting at the knee-high level up to the top of the head. The highest jump is called "father/mother" jump, where the two people holding the garter raise their arms and hold up the garter.
