The film's title is based on Genzaburo Yoshino's novel of the same name published in 1937. Miyazaki said the book's story holds meaning for the protagonist of his film.
Miyazaki's last film, "The Wind Rises," was released in 2013. Its title was also based on a Japanese novel written by Tatsuo Hori.
Among Miyazaki's iconic works include "Spirited Away," "My Neighbor Totoro," "Howl's Moving Castle," and "Princess Mononoke."
