Boys Like Girls in Manila: 'Let’s do it the 2006 way'

After persistent postponements of their tour due to the global pandemic, Boys Like Girls returned to the Philippines and took their fans for a quick glimpse of the past during their highly-anticipated 2-night concert in Manila.

Presented by Play Back Music Festival and Super Awesome productions, the American rock band performed for 2 hours straight on October 10 and 11 as their fans, clad in band tees and ripped jeans, rock their hearts out with the 4 members responsible for the soundtrack of their lives.

In honor of the anniversary of their self-titled debut, Boys Like Girls sang the tracks from top to bottom of their debut album, fulfilling every concert-goer’s ultimate high school dream.

Imagine from listening to “Great Escape” and “Five Minutes to Midnight” only from your iPod classic in 2006 to singing along with them right in the flesh 12 years later – a dream come true, indeed.

But the feels didn’t stop there. The crowd turned even more nostalgic when Boys Like Girls sang “Thunder.”

Aside from performing their debut album in full, they also serenaded the crowd with an acoustic version of "Two Is Better Than One" from their 2009 album "Love Drunk" and  “Be Your Everything” from their 2012 album “Crazy World.”

In order for the fans to avoid longing for Boys Like Girls too much until their next return, they gifted the crowd an exclusive performance of their newest song “Outside” that is bound to be released next year.

As the concert was about to draw to a close, Boys Like Girls caught their fans off guard as they stopped mid-way during their number of “Love Drunk.”

“Did you get your TikToks, Manila? Did you get your snappy chatties? Did you video chat [with] your friend,” Martin Johnson, lead vocalist, asked.

He told a bit of a back story about the said record, how it was released prior to the evolution of social media, implied through his joke of copying the crowd holding their phones to record their performances.

“Back then, I saw you guys jumping up and down, going f*cking crazy, hands in the air without your phones,” Martin said. “Can we put these pieces of sh*t for one song? Let’s do it the 2006 way.”

Staying true to their promise, the crowd tucked their phones away and had the best time of their lives for the last time.

“Manila, you guys have been incredible tonight. Thank you for giving us everything you got,” Martin exclaimed as he bid his farewell alongside lead guitarist Paul DiGiovanni, bassist Gregory James, and drummer John Keefe.
