'Berlin' spin-off series is gonna be lighter than 'Money Heist,' creators say
While Berlin was heavily involved with action and crime in “Money Heist,” the spin-off series is a lighter take on his life before he went on heist after heist led by the Professor.
In a press conference, creators Alex Pina and Esther Martinez Lobato said they want the show to be a breath of fresh air while also serving Berlin’s tactics.
“Of course, we’re going to walk around robberies, but with romanticism and comedy,” Pina said. “We don’t want it to be as dark so we’re going to be limiting the claustrophobic feeling of violence.”
Lobato said the tone will be "closer to rom-com."
“We changed the tone towards a narrative that’s closer to comedy and in the spirit, is closer to rom-com. We tried to be as beautiful as possible with everything,” he said.
Asked if “Berlin” is going to be similar to “Money Heist,” meanwhile, Lobato said it is in some ways, but they also made sure that it’s a “genuine story” with its “own identity.”
On Monday, Netflix gave a first look at the upcoming show with a character introduction featuring the gang that’s going to make Berlin’s life even more full of color.
Keila (Michelle Jenner) is the programmer of the group, while Roi (Julio Peña Fernandez) is “probably Berlin’s sidekick.” Of course, there’s also Damian (Tristan Ulloa).
Joining them are Cameron (Begoña Vargas), who is “here to have fun,” and Bruce, who is dynamic as “he’s nuts” and “always carpe diem.”
“Berlin” has just started filming. It is slated for premiere in 2023.
In the meantime, all five parts of “Money Heist” are currently available for streaming on Netflix. —JCB, GMA News
