Kabataan Partylist Rep. Raoul Manuel wears hand-painted barong to SONA 2022

Kabataan Partylist Rep. Raoul Manuel is wearing a hand-painted barong to SONA 2022 by artist Albert Raqueño.

On social media, Raqueño shared a video showing a closer look of the barong which he hand-painted for 12 hours.

A large blue phoenix, which Manuel says represents rebirth, occupies the whole back portion of the barong, looking as though it was spewing out water.

As the water cuts across the left shoulder toward the front of the barong, the bird's flamboyant blue tail spreads across the right waist portion of the barong.

Both elements meet in the front, where the upper left portion showcases a stairway of what is presumably progress.

There is also a sun, a white dove, and several other smaller birds.

In a tweet, Raqueño said it was his first time to paint on a barong.

He said the administration had nothing to fear over the messages of his barong.

Earlier, the ACT Teachers party-list urged the House of Representatives to withdraw its memorandum prohibiting attire with political messages at the first State of the Nation Address of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Monday. — With reports from Franchesca Viernes and Hermes Joy Tunac/LA, GMA News
