Pen Medina wants to get back into painting after spine surgery, daughter says

Pen Medina is scheduled to go under the knife very soon, but the veteran actor is staying very positive and is already thinking about his recovery period.

In Cata Tibayan's report for "24 Oras Weekend," Sunday, his daughter Kathleen said Pen is looking at the possibility that he might not be able to tape shows for the foreseeable future.

Nonetheless, the 71-year-old actor, who is currently suffering from a spinal condition, still wants to spend his time doing art.

"Lagi niyang sinasabi is that he really wants to go back into painting, kasi 'yun talaga 'yung first love niya [He always says that he really wants to go back into painting, because that's his first love]," Kathleen said.

"He's been asking us to help him him mount an exhibit and he's very talented."

Pen has been in the hospital for three weeks due to Degenerative Disc Disease, a condition which causes pain in the spine.

"Apparently, he twisted his back [in the bathroom and then] he hasn't been able to get up from the couch ever since the night," Kathleen said.

The family thought Pen had a slipped disc, but they learned there is more to his condition after taking him to a hospital.

"Luma na talaga 'yung buto niya, wala nang fluid, so the pain was coming from pagka nagtatamaan 'yung discs niya sa spine [His bones are old, there's no more fluid, so the pain was coming from the friction between the discs in his spine]," Kathleen said.

"And then eventually we also saw there was a pinched nerve there and that's why it was getting worse," she added.

His family appealed for financial assistance and prayers as the actor battles the disease.
