'Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area' will be a 'uniquely Korean tale,' creators say
In case you missed it, Korea is making its own spin on the highly popular Spanish show "La Casa de Papel" or "Money Heist."
Titled "Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area," the new series will unveil another unprecedented heist pulled off by a group of robbers.
The original series got a lot of love from viewers worldwide, so how will this one be different?
In a press conference on Wednesday, the creators promised that it will be a unique Korean tale.
For one, it is set in a world where Korea is on the brink of unification. North and South Korea establish the Unified Korea Mint and are printing one common currency as the groundwork to build a stable joint economy.
"The North and the South Korean situation is something I wanted to depict in the show," said director Kim Hong Sun. "I was thinking that the story of the two Koreas could be told to the global audience because that will spark curiosity."
"It had to be really convincing, it should feel like it was realistic, so that was the part I put the most effort in," he added.
It's the kind of premise that only Korea could have, but Kim said he also wanted to "infuse that hope" into the show.
This context also puts the happenings in the show in a specific angle and lens, said writer Ryu Yong Jae.
"We added the inter-Korean relationship layer to it, so even within the gang and task force, North and South Koreans sometimes have dynamic chemistry among themselves because of the long history of the divided nation," he said.
"So there is another layer that is always on top of the overall situation and that is adding tension," he added.
"Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Are" will follow a gang of robbers, led by the Professor, as they attempt to steal four trillion won as a "revolutionary crime" in a new and unfair world where "only the rich got richer."
Part 1 will premiere on Netflix on June 24. —JCB, GMA News
