'Tomie,' 'Souichi,' 'The Hanging Balloons' to be made into Netflix anime series 'Junji Ito Maniac'

Prepare to be frightened because several works of horror mangaka Junji Ito will be made into anime.

Titled "Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre," the artist said the three stories confirmed to be among the 20 to be released are "Tomie," "Souichi," and "The Hanging Balloons."

"All the talented animators working on this series are putting in their best effort to animate my stories, so I cannot wait to see how they will take my characters and reimagine them in an eerie, new world," Ito said.

Though it's not yet certain which specific "Tomie" and "Souichi" stories are to be adapted, Junji Ito gave a background and a glimpse of his characters.

While the eyes were given focus on "Souichi" since it "reflects the character's inner mind," Ito said Terumi Fujini's head from "The Hanging Balloons" was made into the balloon itself.

His debut work "Tomie," meanwhile, "came from the concept of a lizard’s tail growing back after getting cut off." It shows how the character would still show up after they are killed.

"Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre" is slated for release on Netflix in 2023.
