Who is the first Filipino comic character?


Before the internet and social media, many Filipinos spent their time immersed in the wonderful world of comics.

As explained on #KuyaKimAnoNa on “24 Oras,” the first Filipino comic book character was Kenkoy, whose full name was Francisco “Kenkoy” Harabas.

Kenkoy was created by Tony Velasquez, the father of Filipino comics. The character first appeared on Liwayway Magazine in the 1920s.

Kuya Kim also said the first comic strip made by a Filipino was called “The Monkey and the Turtle.”

It was published in 1889 and it was created by none other than Dr. Jose Rizal. – RC, GMA News
