Did you know that 'Wordle' has a Tagalog version called 'Saltong'?
Netizens have been dedicating minutes—or even hours—daily to guess the English word of the day in the viral online game "Wordle." But did you know that it has a Tagalog version called "Saltong?"
Just like in "Wordle," players of "Saltong" are challenged to guess the five-letter word of the day. Users also have six chances and clues that come in the colors green, yellow, and gray.
If a letter on your initial guess turns green, it means you placed the right letter at the right place, while yellow means it's misplaced. Gray, meanwhile, there's no such letter in the word.
According to "Saltong" creator Carl De Guia, the game really was inspired by "Wordle." This was what he was busy with while in quarantine.
"Akala ko kasi nung umpisa, ibig sabihin ng 'Wordle' ay 'word' saka 'riddle' na pinagsama so naisip ko na funny siguro kung gagawa ng Tagalog version ta pangalan ay 'Saltong'—'salita' saka 'bugtong,'" he said in Athena Imperial's report on "24 Oras."
["I initially thought 'Wordle' is a portmanteau of 'word' and 'riddle' so I thought it would be funny if a Tagalog version called 'Saltong' would be created—'salita' and 'bugtong.'"
"Meron akong ginawang program para makahanap sa mga sites ng online Filipino dictionary websites. 'Yung [na-compile] kong words, 'yon 'yung gagamitin ko sa game," he said.
["I created a program to look for Filipino dictionary websites online. I used the words I compiled for the game."]
Still craving some challenge? Players may also try different versions including "Saltong Mini" which has four letter-words, "Saltong Max" with seven-letter words, and "Saltong Hex" with 4-19-letter words.
Designed like "Wordle," "Saltong" wouldn't take much of anyone's time since it finishes after guessing the word right. You'll have to wait for the following day for the next round.
Since he shared the game to his friends on January 14, De Guia said "Saltong" has now 140,000 users.
What are you waiting for? You still have over five hours to guess today's "Saltong" word of the day!
