When did the first movie theater in PHL open? Kuya Kim shares some cinema trivia

As movie theaters begin reopening this week after almost two years, Kuya Kim has shared some Philippine cinema trivia on “24 Oras.”

On #KuyaKimAnoNa Friday, he shared that the first cinema in the Philippines was Salon de Pertierra in Escolta. It screened its first films in 1897 and among those were four silent French films.

A restaurant now occupied the area where it used to be located.

The first Filipino film, meanwhile, was shown in 1919. “Dalagang Bukid,” which starred Marcellano Ilagan and Atang dela Rama, was made by Jose Nepomuceno, the father of Philippine cinema. – RC, GMA News
