Twitter reveals its top 20 most-mentioned Korean dramas, movies

Fans of Korean dramas, movies, music, and webtoons have many ways by which they access their favorites online. However, the one place where they talk about all of these? Twitter.

Twitter has released its top 20 list of most tweeted K-dramas, movies, and webtoons, and among those mentioned are big hits for many Filipinos too.

The list was presented by YeonJeong Kim, head of global K-pop and K-content partnerships at Twitter, during MU:CON 2021, which celebrated the 10th anniversary of the event held by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, and the Korea Creative Content Agency.

According to Twitter, the results covered data analyzed from global English tweets gathered from July 2018 to June 2021.

The top three most mentioned K-dramas on Twitter are “Kingdom,” “Itaewon Class,” and “True Beauty.”

“For many K-pop fans, K-dramas were the next type of K-content they tried after falling in love with K-pop, and the most popular K-dramas reflect this preference,” said Twitter in a release.

Many of these dramas featured K-pop stars in big roles. For instance Cha Eun Woo, a member of ASTRO, played the male lead Lee Su Ho on “True Beauty,” while Ok Taec Yeon, a member of 2PM, played the lead villain Jang Han Seok on “Vincenzo.”

Twitter also said “Itaewon Class,” which had its soundtrack “Sweet Night” sung by BTS member V, “led fans to other K-dramas, making Itaewon Class a critical influence for K-content and new fans getting more interested.”

Twitter’s K-movie list, meanwhile, is led by Academy Award winner “Parasite,” followed by “Minari” and “Snowpiercer.”

Apart from “Parasite” and “Snowpiercer,” other films directed by Bong Joon Ho were also on the most-mentioned list, including “Okja,” “Mother,” and “The Host.”

Meanwhile, “Minari” also took home an Oscar for best supporting actress Youn Yuh Jung.

“Twitter has proven that K-pop—along with many other fandoms—thrive due to the characteristics of Twitter: live, public, and conversational. People are consuming K-content through various channels, but in the end, the conversations are being held on Twitter,” said Kim. – RC, GMA News
