Jinky Oda reveals she tried out different jobs when she moved to US

Jinky Oda's life in the US wasn't a walk in the park.

In a "Tunay Na Buhay" episode on Wednesday, the former comedian shared that she tried out several jobs when she moved to San Francisco, California, in 2016.

"Nag-try muna ako caregiver," she said. "Nag-comedy bar ako for quite some time."

[I first tried becoming a caregiver ... I also worked at a comedy bar for quite some time.]

There was even a time a bishop offered her shelter in exchange for ministerial services.

"Kinupkop niya [bishop] ako. More than a year doon niya ako pinatira sa bahay niya," Jinky said.

"He asked me to help his church na mag-minster ... Kahit papaano mayroon naman akong alam how to manage 'yung small group, mga leadership setting."

[He took me in. I stayed in his house for more than a year. He asked me to help minister at his church. I have some knowledge on how to manage small groups, those leadership settings.]

According to Jinky, it was her son who convinced her to move to the US.

"At the time tapos na 'yung 'Vampire Ang Daddy Ko,' so sabi ko ano mangyayari kasi parang that time marami ng komedyanteng lumalabas ... same time anak ko pabalik-balik dito. Tinanong niya ako, 'do you see yourself here in the US?' Um-oo ako kahit hindi ako sure," she said.

[At the time, "Vampire Ang Daddy Ko" has ended, so I asked myself what was going to happen because many comedians were coming out ... at the same time, my son was going back and forth to the US. He asked me, "do you see yourself here in the US?" I answered yes even if I wasn't sure.]

A month later, she moved to the US.

After years of trying out different jobs, Jinky said she took a leap of faith and tried out law enforcement.

Last month, Jinky celebrated her first anniversary as a security officer for a private company. She said she was an unarmed officer who dealt more on written work and knowledge.

Jinky, who rose to fame with her comedic role in the 1989 fantasy series "Okay Ka, Fairy Ko," also starred on different GMA shows such as "Vampire Ang Daddy Ko" and "Daldalita." – Kaela Malig/RC, GMA News
