Callalily reveals the story behind iconic song 'Magbalik'
We all remember jamming to Callalily's "Magbalik," but do you know the story behind the song's creation?
In a video by OG YouTube channel, the OPM band credited their drummer Lemuel Belaro for the song's composition.
"Inspired 'yun sa isang letter," Lemuel revealed. "May nag-send sakin, doon ko kinuha 'yung inspiration ng 'Magbalik.'"
("That was inspired by a letter. Someone sent it to me, and that's where I took inspiration for 'Magbalik.'")
He added that he started with the chorus and interestingly, he wrote it in a jeepney!
"Kasama ko si Kean noon, papunta kami sa bahay nila. Sabi ko, 'Bro, may sinusulat akong kanta, ito 'yung chorus.' Nasa jeep kami noon," he added.
("I was with Kean that time, we were on the way to his house. I said, 'Bro, I'm writing a song, this is the chorus.' We were in a jeep.")
Kean said that Lemuel slept in his house that night, and the lead singer talked to him about his rocky lovelife at the time.
"Buong gabi, tinapos ko yung song. Gumising ako ng madaling araw. Pag-gising ni Kean tapos na yung song," Lemuel said.
("I wrote the song the whole night. I woke up in the wee hours of the morning. By the time Kean woke up, the song was done.")
Lemuel also said that he mixed in the theme of God's love for the pre-chorus, particularly the line: "Hindi magbabago pagmamahal sayo."
"Magbalik" was released by Callalily in 2016 and turned out to be the band's breakthrough single. It won Song of the Year during the 2017 OPM Songhits Music Awards.
Their other iconic tracks include "Stars" and "Pasan," all from their debut album "Destination XYZ." —JCB, GMA News
