After losing mall gigs, 72-year-old pianist now earns income thanks to online concerts

A 72-year-old pianist found himself out of a job when the coronavirus pandemic hit the country last year.

Due to the community quarantine, Bong Infante or "Tito Bong" could not do his usual gigs in malls, where he has mesmerized many people with his energetic playing.

"I'm still strong [even though] I'm 72 already. It's a waste if I don't move my fingers," he said in Filipino in Oscar Oida's report for "24 Oras."

Thanks to one of his neighbors, however,  is now happily playing the piano again and getting paid for it.

Raymundo Javier, who now serves as Tito Bong's manager, had the idea to hold online concerts, as many others have done last year.

"From there we ask for tokens of appreciation, I call it a virtual tip," he said. "If you are happy with his performance, give a little amount to help Bong."

Tito Bong now holds online concerts once a month on Facebook and YouTube.

Asked about his earnings, he said it's so different because he's making more money than before.

"Many are donating for people who lost their jobs like those in the entertainment industry," he said.

As for until when will he continue to play the piano, this is what he had to say:

"As long as I live," he said. "The Lord gave this [talent] to me."
