GMA Network is most trusted news brand in the Philippines, has the most reach—Digital News Report 2021
GMA Network continues to enjoy the trust of the Filipino audience amid the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the Digital News Report 2021 released by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, GMA Network is the most trusted news brand in the Philippines.
GMA Network has a brand trust score of 74%, five points higher than second-ranked Manila Bulletin, six points higher than TV5 and Philippine Star, and eight points higher than Philippine Daily Inquirer.
The DNR said trust in news among Filipinos rose to 32% compared to 27% from one year ago, though it remains under the global average of 44%. The Philippines is among the bottom six from the media markets included in the report.
Meanwhile, GMA Network and GMA News Online also enjoy the most reach among Philippine media outlets.
GMA Network, with its news programs "24 Oras" and "Saksi," as well as GMA News TV, has a weekly usage of 59%, well ahead of ABS-CBN's 40% among television, radio, and print media.
Online, GMA News Online has a weekly usage of 53%, ten points higher than ABS-CBN News Online's 43%.
The DNR also found that online, including social media, is the top source of news among the respondents with 87%. Around 78% also use smartphones to access news.
DNR 2021 is based on a poll of 92,000 people in 46 media markets, among them 2,209 Filipino internet users ages 18 and above. The survey was conducted by international market research agency YouGov Plc. in January.
The survey sample, however, tends to skew towards online use especially in countries with low internet penetration.
