Manix Abrera on Netflix’s ‘Trese’: Good news for parents whose children are aspiring artists
Renowned comic artist Manix Abrera expressed his excitement for the release of “Trese,” a Netflix original anime series based on Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo’s Filipino fantasy-horror graphic novel.
In an episode of “The Howie Severino Podcast,” Manix said in Filipino: “I’m really excited for ‘Trese,’ which was created by Budjette and Kajo, because they’re my friends.”
Upon learning of the development, the “Kikomachine” and “News Hardcore” author said one of the first things he thought was what it could mean for aspiring comic artists.
“Ang una kong naisip, napakaganda para sa mga magulang, na kunwari gusto ng anak mo maging artist, gusto maging komikero. Makikita nila, ‘ay, may future pala. Puwede palang may ganito,’” he said.
[My first thought was, this is good news for parents, if ever their children wanted to become artists, comic book artists. They will see that, “oh, there’s future here. This is possible.”]
“It’s funny but that was my first thought, that it was good for the parents especially of kids who have a hard time explaining that they want to be artists, that they want to create comics,” he added.
“Trese,” the country’s first Netflix original anime series, is set in Manila, where the mythical creatures of Philippine folklore live in hiding among humans.
The series follows Alexandra Trese as she goes head to head with the criminal underworld composed of malevolent supernatural beings.
To premiere on July 11, “Trese” will include “Pretty Little Liars” star Filipino-Canadian actress Shay Mitchell and Liza Soberano in its English and Filipino voice cast. – Kaela Malig/RC, GMA News
