Netflix is rolling out about 40 new original anime titles this year

When Netflix said they were expanding their anime offerings, they weren't kidding.

During the Anime Japan 2021, Netflix's Anime Chief Producer Taiki Sakurai said they were streaming about 40 new original anime titles this year.

"This is close to double what we premiered last year; if there are 52 weeks in a year, this means we are streaming a new title almost every week," he said.

In October last year, he said they needed to produce more content to keep up with viewers' demand. Sakurai reported a 50 percent annual viewership increase in the anime category, saying that over 100 million households around the world chose to watch at least one anime title on Netflix in 2019.

Additionally, anime titles appeared in the Top 10 list in almost 100 countries in 2020.

Among the 40 new titles to premiere this year are "The Way of the Househusband," "Record of Ragnarok," "Yasuke," and "Eden."

The titles that already hit the streaming platform include "DOTA: Dragon's Blood," "Pacific Rim: The Black," and "B: The Beginning Succession."

Sakurai added that the action genre are "consistently popular" among their viewers.

"We want to continue expanding this genre for fans, with even more upcoming shows such as 'The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf,' and 'Spriggan,'" he said.

And it looks like Netflix is making efforts to truly cross borders when it comes to anime.

For example, they had tapped "best-in-class talent" from different countries to work on "Eden," such as a "Taiwanese production studio, a Chinese computer graphics team, and an Australian music composer who collaborated on this story from around the world."

"So much more to come!" Sakurai said. —JCB, GMA News
