How Ben&Ben wrote 'Inevitable,' the song featured in Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin's commercial

Ben&Ben surprised their fans on Valentine’s Day as they dropped their empowering new single “Inevitable,” which is actually the official theme song of the Smart Communications' latest ad featuring "Crash Landing on You" stars and real life couple Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin.

As CLOY fans, the band’s keyboardist Patricia Lasaten said that this is a “dream collaboration.”

“We can't help but be kilig and at the same time wish that our co-fans who would hear the song would also connect it with the evolving story of Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin,” she said.

Written by lead vocalist and guitarist Paolo Benjamin after a solo afternoon run by the beach near their house, the track “ascends to a place where love can be inevitably beautiful even in its simple, unassuming terms.”

According to Paolo, the song inspires its listeners to believe in one’s genuineness and in the power of fate.

“'Inevitable' is a song that tries to describe the nature of fate, and how all our actions somehow lead us to some better place that is destined for us,” he said.

“It’s also a song about being real with someone, and that no matter how scary that may seem at times, there is freedom in baring your truest nature with someone dear to you, even if that someone is yourself,” Paolo added.

With "Inevitable," the band showcased their newfound musical direction and went beyond the confines of their radio-ready sound without alienating Ben&Ben's identity that fans loved.

“Our process started with a mix of acoustic guitars, which I tweaked with sitar effects as the main intro riff; kind of like a representation of the two contrasting feelings working together,” said Miguel Benjamin, lead vocalist and guitarist.

And around the contrasting feelings, they built everything: "Jam’s drums and Agnes’ bass carrying the steady base of the song, and then Pat’s piano, Poch’s electric guitar and pads, Keifer’s violin, Andrew and Toni’s percussions; Andrew, Miguel, Poch, and Toni's backing vocals."

According to Poch, they went against their usual process, instead recording a demo individually before recording their own parts "a few days after without knowing how the song would sound like in the end."

In a statement, Smart shared that "Inevitable" was specifically written for the ad. Sony Music meanwhile said that it was “inspired by recent events surrounding the band’s lives."

"Their latest song encourages listeners and music fans to live in the moment freely and truthfully without the need to succumb to expectations,” Sony Music said in a statement. — Franchesca Viernes/LA, GMA News
