Remember Charlie the Unicorn? The viral cartoon just turned 15

Anyone who had internet in 2005 surely knows Charlie the Unicorn.

Creator Jason Steele took to Twitter to celebrate the cartoon's 15th anniversary, revealing that he actually meant for it to be a birthday gift for his mother.

"I made the cartoon as a birthday gift for my unicorn-loving mom, and on November 26th, 2005 it was uploaded to the @Newgrounds portal. Happy birthday mom, and Charlie, and thanks to everyone who has watched over the years!" he said.

He recalled that he made Charlie the Unicorn "in the wake of losing my job, car, and most of my possessions to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

"I had no money with which to buy gifts, but thanks to my mom’s help I had a computer again so I could make her a cartoon. I owe her so much!" he added.

Charlie the Unicorn started off as less than a 4-minute clip released on Newgrounds and later uploaded on YouTube. It gained massive popularity, leading to a series of sequels.

The cartoon follows Charlie, who was dragged along by two other unicorns on an adventure to the mythical Candy Mountain. —JCB, GMA News
