Imelda Marcos mentioned in ‘The Crown’ Season 4

Former First Lady Imelda Marcos was surprisingly mentioned in the new season of popular Netflix series “The Crown.”

In the third episode of Season 4, Princess Margaret, the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II, tells the story of how she met the Marcos family matriarch.

“So, there we are in Manila, in the middle of a state banquet, when who barges into the room? None other than Imelda Marcos,” says Margaret (played by Helena Bonham Carter) while holding court among the royals.

The Countess of Snowdon was referring to her official visit to the Philippines in 1980.

“She makes a beeline straight for me, saying she’s desperate to show me her ... wait for it …” she continues, but gets interrupted by Princess Anne, the Queen’s only daughter.

“Shoe collection,” says the Princess Royal (Erin Doherty), but Margaret corrects her. “Shell collection.”

The royals then make fun of Imelda’s accent, with the Queen (Olivia Colman) asking if Imelda had “something in her teeth.”

“She was probably trying to say ‘shoe,’ and you misunderstood her,” Prince Philip (Tobias Menzies) says diplomatically.

“No, I can assure you, it was seashells,” Margaret says.

The Princess continues to tell her adventures in Manila, but she is interrupted by the arrival of Lady Diana Spencer, who is newly engaged to Prince Charles (Josh O'Connor).

It’s not certain if the anecdote is based on actual history or added by the creators taking artistic license.

The choice fits the context of the scene, however, as Diana (Emma Corrin) begins to realize how big of a leap it is for her to join the royal family. – RC/LA, GMA News
