How ‘Holidate’ stars Emma Roberts, Luke Bracey pulled off that iconic scene from ‘Dirty Dancing’

If you’ve seen Netflix’s new rom-com “Holidate,” you’re probably still thinking about Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey reenacting that iconic scene from “Dirty Dancing” at a New Year’s Eve party.

We’re talking about the 1987 classic where Patrick Swayze tells Jennifer Grey, “No one puts Baby in the corner,” before they dance to “The Time of My Life” and Patrick lifts Jennifer up in the air and the two get lost in a romantic daze.

The “Holidate” version, however, ends in a disaster: Emma’s character Sloan rips her dress open, giving Jackson (Bracey)—and basically everyone at the party—a free look at her chest.

GMA News Online got the chance to ask the two lead stars about the hilarious scene in a recent roundtable over Zoom, and it turns out that it was about as much fun to film as it looked.

“We did a little practice beforehand, and we had like a mini trampoline and some crash pads and some stuntmen,” Luke said.

“I think it was just fun. I think the whole lead up to it was a really fun bit as well. You know, moving the crowd out and like, the whole build up to the actual stunt,” he added.

Emma, on the other hand, loves “Dirty Dancing” so she was likewise delighted to turn that part of the screenplay into a reality.

“Reading it on paper, I loved it so much, and when we shot it, I loved it but I couldn’t really tell how it was gonna turn out and, seeing it in the movie, it just really made me smile,” she told GMA News Online.

“And I mean I love the movie ‘Dirty Dancing,’ so it was so much fun to get to do that, and I think it really is like one of the best scenes in the movie, so I was really really excited how they put it together,” Emma added.

“Holidate,” directed by John Whitesell and written by Tiffany Paulsen, is about two strangers named Sloane (Emma Roberts) and Jackson (Luke Bracey) who both hate the holidays.

To avoid awkward questions from family members about their love lives, they device this convenient pact to be each other’s “holidate” for every festive occasion throughout the next year.

“Holidate” also stars Andrew Bachelor, Jessica Capshaw, Manish Dayal, Alex Moffat, Jake Manley, Cynthy Wu, with Frances Fisher and Kristin Chenoweth. – RC, GMA News
