3 insect-eating plants that are nice to have around the house
Plants have been all the rage lately, but did you know there are potted plants that can actually help you get rid of insects around the house?
Carnivorous plants like venus fly traps, byblis, and sundew have pitfalls and traps that enable them to capture and digest insects, quelling worries about a possible infestation of critters inside your home.
Many of them also look really cool, and they're very easy to take care of, too.
GMA'7's "Unang Hirit" asked plant expert Jude Venett Penales to tell us more about the different kinds of carnivorous plants.
The hobbyist turned-seller also shared tips on how to get them and take care of them.
1. Venus fly trap
Venus fly traps have a mouth-like mechanism that can close and trap an insect.
According to Jude, you can get a venus fly trap for as low as P1,500-P4,000, depending on the size.
2. Byblis
Unlike "active" carnivorous plants like the venus fly traps, a byblis can trap insect with its sticky hairs that cover its surface.
Jude said you can get a byblis plant for as low as P800-P3,000.
3. Sundew
When an insect goes near a sundew plant, its hairy tentacles can trap it by coiling around the prey.
According to Jude, sun dew or drosera P300-P2,500 are priced at P300-P2,500.
Plants have seen a rise in popularity especially during COVID-19. Not only do plants help in easing anxiety and depression, they also help in improving air quality — an often overlooked point, especially with COVID-19 being a respiratory disease. — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
