Former beauty queen Zahra Saldua is now an Army reservist after completing her military training.

In Lhar Santiago’s report on “24 Oras” Tuesday, the Miss Earth - Air Philippines 2018 titleholder said this achievement had always been a childhood dream of hers. 

Although military work and beauty pageantry are two different worlds, Zahra said the two had things in common.

“Parehong kailangan ng commitment, pareho kailangan ng disiplina, pareho kailangan ng poise,” she said.

“You still need to have that poise, you’re proud, you’re ready, you’re confident, sa beauty queen ganoon din,” she added.

Apart from training, Zahra said she also went through a simulation that challenged her physically.

Not only did she get wounded, but she also experienced falling to the ground and being with a snake up close.

“Umakyat kami ng bundok, nag-recon kami. Para kaming merong kalaban,” she said. “It’s really a simulation of what we’re really going to do in troubled areas.”

There were times, she said, when she still acted like a beauty queen in the military, especially when they were taking her photo.

“Meron times na pag nagpi-picture, naka-uniform ako, ’yung naka-beauty queen pose so I have to stop myself ... Napapansin nila and natutuwa sila,” Zahra shared, laughing. – Kaela Malig/RC, GMA News
