How Metro Manila’s traffic pushed Joyce Pring into podcasting

Joyce Pring is one of the most popular podcasters in the Philippines, but have you ever wondered how she got into podcasts in the first place?

In a recent virtual interview with Spotify Philippines, the Filipino host and content creator revealed that it was actually the heavy Metro Manila traffic that got her hooked on listening to episodes and episodes of other people talking about interesting topics.

Apparently, Joyce got sick of complaining about how much time she wasted being stuck in traffic, so she turned her attention to podcasts instead.

“I used to drive around in [Metro] Manila and, I kid you not, maybe 10 kilometers of driving would take me two hours going from QC (Quezon City) to Makati and, from Makati to QC, another two hours,” she shared.

“And so I just told myself: You know what? I am spending so much time in traffic, I am not gonna start complaining about it, I’m gonna find a way to maximize this time because I need to travel for work,” she added.

Joyce ended up loving it so much that she explored podcasts on a wide array of topics, from meditation to true crime, until finally finding a topic of her own.

In October 2018, the first-ever episode of “Adulting with Joyce Pring” was uploaded on Spotify for all her fellow 20-somethings to listen to.

For the next two years, thousands of people would listen to her talk about handling real-life situations experienced by people in their 20s, from breakups, family drama to bouncing back from a slump for your next job interview.

And now, “Adulting with Joyce Pring” is among the Pinoy-made podcasts included in Spotify’s Podcast Exclusives line-up, which aims to usher the “next chapter” of audio storytelling in the Philippines.
