Pinay game developer creates PHL-inspired Pokemon characters in fan-made game

A Pinay game developer has created Philippine-inspired Pokemon characters for her very own fan-made game.

According to an “AHA!” episode last Sunday, game developer Jasmine Grace Abraham’s “Pokemon Eternal Light and Infernal Dark” has over 300 new Pokemon characters inspired by animals and creatures found in the Philippines and in the country’s folktales.

The fan-made Pokemon game has “Tilafin,” a water-type Pokemon inspired by the Tilapia, “Baboink,” inspired by our very own baboy ramo, and “Beterror,” inspired by bats and the manananggal.

According to Jasmine, her company Elid team took two years to create the game.

“Grade 10 ako nanood ako ng YouTube tutorials ng paano gumawa ng Pokemon fan game, Jasmine shared. “Dream ko talaga gumawa ng Pokemon game tyaka gusto ko magtrabaho sa Nintendo, ’yung Pokemon company.”

In the game, players are tasked to explore the Bayan region and discover all the 300 new Pokemons.

Aside from watching animal shows, Jasmine shared that she was inspired to create the game after she saw the lack of a Philippine-inspired Pokemon fan-made game.

“Nakita ko sa internet na onti lang gumagawa ng Philippine game na Pokemon. Mostly art and not a game so ang plano ko gumawa ng Pokemon na based sa bansa natin,” she said. – Kaela Malig/RC, GMA News
