Winnie Monsod on cancel culture: 'You cannot just listen to people who think like you'

Winnie Monsod did not mince her words when she was asked to weigh in on cancel culture.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, "cancel culture" refers to the withdrawal of support for public figures "in response to their objectionable behavior or opinions."

For Tita Winnie, people should practice critical thinking instead of immediately moving to "cancel" an individual.

"If they cancel somebody just because on one issue this somebody does not agree with them, I think that is the wrong way," she said in a #RealTalk video on GMA News and Public Affairs.

She said that the act of cancelling is about thinking fast, but crucial issues require thinking slowly.

"You have to get the views of everybody so that you can make an informed decision," she said. "You cannot just listen to people who think like you."

Tita Winnie was also asked for her thoughts on the "woke culture" of Millennials and Gen Z.

"Woke" is an American slang term which has been recently used to refer to awareness towards social issues.

However, Tita Winnie said this is not actually new.

"Just because you have a new term doesn't mean that it is a new concept. All of us in our lives have been woke," she said. "Meaning to say, we are conscious of these things."

Tita Winnie is hosting a weekly show "Newsmakers," a part of the "New Normal: Survival Guide" series which aims to help Filipinos cope with the pandemic.

"Newsmakers" airs every Monday; Kara David on "Bright Side" every Tuesday; Susan Enriquez on "Pera Paraan" every Wednesday; Rovilson Fernandez and Tonipet Gaba on "Home Work" every Thursday; and Drew Arellano on "Family Time" every Friday. —MGP, GMA News
