5 awesome things you may not know about SpongeBob Squarepants

Many of us grew up watching a hardworking underwater fry cook named SpongeBob Squarepants.

His hilarious jokes and crazy antics may have given us joy as children and adults, but there are a lot of things you might not know yet about the absorbent, yellow, and porous cartoon character.

For example, did you know it was his birthday last July 14? And just what kind of creature is Squidward?

Allow us to share five things about SpongeBob Squarepants that make the beloved children’s show all the more awesome.

1. SpongeBob is an ’80s kid.

You might think we’re joking, but it’s true!

Based on his driver’s license that appeared in one episode, SpongeBob was born on July 14, 1986. That makes him at least 34 years old—way older than the actual TV show that first aired in 1999.

2. SpongeBob, Gary, and the narrator are voiced by one guy.

SpongeBob is voiced by actor Tom Kenny.

What a lot of fans don’t know is that Tom is also the voice behind a lot of other characters, including SpongeBob’s pet snail Gary, Patchy the Pirate, and even the show’s narrator with a French accent!

3. SpongeBob is quite the influencer.

SpongeBob Squarepants currently has more than 3.1 million followers on Instagram and 2.3 million followers on Twitter.

Like many of today’s celebs and internet stars, “SpongeBob” constantly shares updates and gives his fans a lot of funny memes that were on the show long before the term “meme” even existed.

4. Squidward is actually an octopus.

We know: Mind = blown.

Show creator Stephen Hillenberg shocked a lot of fans when he revealed that SpongeBob’s very annoyed neighbor and coworker Squidward Tentacles was actually an octopus. According to an Insider report, the character was also drawn with only six tentacles instead of one because it makes him easier to animate.

5. Wait, he’s real?

There's actually a living organism named Spongiforma squarepantsii.

According to BBC News, researchers at the San Francisco State University (SFSU) discovered a new species of mushroom in Borneo back in 2011, and they named it after the cartoon character. Cool, right?
