Filipino martial arts featured on Netflix’s ‘Old Guard’

Jampacked with action, Netflix’s new film “Old Guard” features Filipino martial arts Kali and Arnis in its combat scenes.

In a teaser video released on Thursday, the film’s stunt coordinator said they included many types of  fighting styles and movements.

“Andy moves fluently from multiple styles, from ancient styles to modern techniques,” said stunt coordinator Brycen Counts, referring to the main character played by Charlize Theron.

Fight coordinator Danny Hernandez said they included Kali and Arnis in the combat scenes and training, as well as Wushu, Iaido, Kendo, and Silat, among other martial arts.

“We just put all of it in the spectrum,” he said.

Charlize recalled how hard and great it was working on the action scenes since she had to portray Andy, a centuries-old warrior with a mysterious inability to die.

“I obviously had to fight like someone who’s been fighting for 6,000 years and that level of perfection is hard to come by but the team who I got to work with on this film really focused on my strength,” the actress said.

Based on Gregory Rucka’s graphic novel, “Old Guard” is about a “covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die” who have fought to protect the world for centuries.

However, one event after the other, the group is suddenly exposed and they scramble to eliminate those who seek to “replicate and monetize their power.”

“Old Guard” can now be streamed on Netflix. – Kaela Malig/RC, GMA News
