Now that quarantine restrictions have been lifted, bikers need to be extra careful as to not endanger themselves when they ride alongside other cars.

On “24 Oras” Thursday, Ivan Mayrina shared a few safety tips to remember:

1. Bring the right safety gear.

Aside from wearing a helmet, use sunglasses and a face mask.

Since the heat outside can be hazardous to one’s health, having drinking water is also a necessity.

Invest on the right gear. According to the report, bicycles nowadays can cost at least P8,000, almost the same amount spent on a daily commute for three months at P100 a day.

Helmets can go from P800 to P3,000, shades are about P900, and gloves, P250.

2. Use hand signals when crossing and turning.

Staying on bike lanes is always the safest option.

When there is a need to cross or turn, always give a signal, be it with a hand or an attached device.

Always stay on the side and avoid counterflowing.

3. Know when to take a break.

According to cardiologist Dr. Jeannica Lerios dela Pena, it’s important to pace yourself when cycling long distances and know when to take a break.

“Kung halimbawa may diabetes ka, may high cholesterol, kailangan abang-abang tayo kasi ’yun ’yung mga may risk factor,” she said. “Pace yourself, dahan-dahan, if naramdaman mo hingal ka na, pahinga, uminom ng tubig. Hindi ’yung itutulak mo sarli mo.” – Kaela Malig/RC, GMA News
