Are you into K-drama? Because we definitely are! Since Father's Day is now on the horizon, here's a special treat to all K-drama fans. Here are the dad characters that we found to be really deserving of a Father of the Year award.
Sung Dong-il (Played by Sung Dong-il) from Reply 1988
If your dad is the silent and the not-expressive type, then you could definitely relate to the kids of Sung Dong-il in Reply 1988. Since his love language is obviously not physical touch and words of affirmation, he has other ways of expressing his love for his children in his own unique way.

Despite the arguments with his eldest daughter, Sung Bo-ra (played by Ryu Hye-young), he still managed to show how much he cares for her, even if it wasn't through conventional means. When his second daughter, Sung Duk-seon (played by Lee Hyer-ri), opened up her problems, he silently listened and reassured her that everything is okay. Although he may be strict sometimes, he never lost his cool when comforting and protecting his kids.
You can watch Reply 1988 on Netflix.
Hwang Chi-young (Played by Choi Won-young) from Sky Castle
Despite the high expectations in society for children to excel, he never added to the existing pressure his son is feeling. He supported his son, Hwang Woo-joo (Kang Chan-hee) and let him take things slow. When his first wife died, Chi-young made sure to comfort his son and make things a little easier for him. He was such a calm and understanding father that he really stood out among all the fathers in the drama.
You can watch Sky Castle on iflix and Viu.
Park Sung-yeol (Played by Son Hyun-joo) from Itaewon Class
Just like Park Saeroyi (played by Park Seo-jun), you probably have been in trouble when you were younger, which did not exactly please your parents. In the drama, when his son got in trouble, Sung-yeol knew his son did the right thing, so he still stuck up for Saeroyi. He’s just the type of dad we all need, someone to defend us and believe in us even though our ways of doing something right could be wrong for other people. He taught his son to fight for what is right and he stood by him.
Even after his death, it was obvious how much of a good father he is to Saeroyi through the values Saeroyi has shown in attaining his dreams. Although he only appeared in the drama a few times, he still was able to show how instilling the right principles to his child could make a great impact on the child's life.
You can watch Itaewon Class on Netflix.
Chae Chi-soo (Played by Park Sang-myun) from Healer
There are times when you could've possibly wondered how your parents just somehow know what's going on, even without you actually telling them. However, more than the confusion, you also feel grateful for times like these. In the drama, Healer, the adorable father-daughter relationship of Chae Young-shin (played by Park Min-young) and her adoptive father, Chae Chi-soo made us miss our own fathers, too!
Just like any parent, he seems to know just what his kid needs, most of the time. During those times that he couldn't figure out what's happening, he knew how to ask for help from his friends, without forcing her to talk about it. He comforted Young-shin while quietly listening to her worries. He didn't ask a lot of things, instead, he just let her cry on his shoulders as he cried silently with her.
You can watch Healer on Youtube and Viu.
Choi Dal-pyung (Played by Shin Jung-geun) from Pinocchio
Although Choi Dal-pyung loves to exchange playful banter with his daughter Choi In-ha (played by Park Shin-hye), he has always been so supportive of his daughter. After their divorce, Choi Dal-pyung raised In-ha, without making her feel that her Pinocchio syndrome was much of a problem in achieving her dreams.
When it was time for his daughter to chase her dreams of becoming a reporter, he was there, silently cheering her on. Unlike her mother who thought her sickness was a burden, In-ha’s father believed in her and pushed her to continue striving for her dreams despite failures and hardships she may face.
You can watch Pinocchio on Netflix.
Choi Kang-woo (Played by Yoo Ji-tae ) from Mad Dog
Not all families have to be formed by blood. Sometimes, people we are close to become our second family as well, just like how Choi Kang-woo became the father figure for Jang Ha-ri (played by Ryu Hwa-young) in their little Mad Dog family. Although they are unrelated, they have learned to treat each other like family, because of their lack of one. The way he was protective of his family, but still let them do things on their own make us respect him as a leader of the family and as the father figure.
You can watch Mad Dog on iflix.
Lee Kang-doo (Played by Lee Jun-ho) from Rain or Shine
The eldest children of the family could probably relate when we say that they are the third parents of the family because we also take care of our younger siblings. Lee Kang-doo is an accurate representation of us first-borns because he took such great care of his younger sister, Lee Jae-young (played by Kim Hye-jun) and became the father figure especially after their parents passed.
Although they live separately and they're not the sweet sibling type, it was obvious throughout the drama how Kang-doo cares so much about his sister. He worked different jobs just to provide for his sister and supports her in achieving her dream of becoming a doctor. Thanks to Kang-doo, his sister is able to live a good life and continue pursuing her dreams.
You can watch Rain or Shine on iflix.
Goo Dae-sung (Played by Kim Kap-soo) from Cinderella’s Stepsister
Goo Dae-sung is a kind-hearted man, even to his stepdaughter Eun-jo (played by Moon Geun-young). Eun-jo's mother wasn’t exactly the most ideal type. Her mother had her fair share of abusive relationships in the past, which also affected Eun-jo.
When she met her stepdad, he cared for her deeply and he became the parent figure that she needs. Because of his goodness, she was able to open up slowly and have hope for a better future for her and her mother in Dae-sung's home. It was such an unconventional plotline in a drama, so we were pleasantly surprised at how they made a twist on the usual Cinderella story.
You can watch Cinderella’s Stepsister on Viki.
Choi Jang-ho (Played by Oh Kwang-rok) and Choi Man-suk (Played by Kwon Sung-duk) from High School King of Savvy
You can watch the teaser here.
Choi Jang-ho adopted Lee Min-suk (played by Seo In-guk) and raised the kid with his father, Choi Man-suk. Jang-ho was such a loving father who was ready to sacrifice anything for his child. When his child got hurt, it broke our hearts to see him because he would rather get himself hurt than his son. On the other hand, the grandfather on the show was such a scene-stealer with his child-like antics and innocence when raising a teenager. They both showed how much of an impact they made in the growth of Min-suk into the loveable character that he was.
You can watch High School King of Savvy on Viki.
Kang Dong-gu (Played by Kim Jung-hyun), Lee Joon-ki, (Played by Lee Yi-kyung), and Bong Doo-sik (Played by Son Seung-won) from Welcome to Waikiki 1
This drama follows the adventure of three bachelors who are all managing a guest house while they aspire to become successful in their own crafts as a director, actor and writer. When a single mom with her baby asked to stay in their guesthouse, they helped care for the baby who was not related to them.
This drama is so relatable especially to new fathers out there who are trying to figure out the art of caring for an infant. They learned how to feed the baby, clothe her, and even change her diaper. As they spent more time with the baby, she grew on them and they, in turn, vowed to protect her from harm’s way. Bonus here is the cuteness of Baby Sol!
You can watch Welcome to Waikiki 1 on Netflix and iflix.
Fathers come in all forms. They are our personal heroes, our first love, and our number one fans. They all deserve the appreciation especially this Fathers’ Day, so make sure you go and tell your dad how much he means to you. Thank him for all the things that he provided for you and the family, including the unsolicited dose of dad jokes!
