Here’s a lesson on pest control from Lyn Ching after termites destroyed her book collection

“Unang Hirit” host Lyn Ching decided to tidy up her library the other day only to find her extensive book collection was infested by termites.

During her segment on the morning show, Lyn shared a couple of cleaning mistakes she made that not only failed to get rid of the pests, but made her say goodbye to at least 40 beloved books.

Likes most people, Lyn's first instinct was to clear away her shelves, which disturbed the termites.

“Unang reaction ko was very wrong, kasi hindi mo pala dapat ginagalaw, apparently,” Lyn said.

“Ang ginawa ng mga anay, dahil nga tinanggal ko ang mga libro, ay naghanap sila ng ibang mga lugar dito sa bahay na mabahayan. So hindi ko alam kung nasaan sila.”

Lyn also tried to exterminate the bugs herself by burning some books that were beyond saving, and also tried to submerge them in water.

She realized: “Ang dapat pala pag may anay invasion sa bahay, huwag niyong gagalawin. Tatawag kayo kaagad agad ng yung mga maaring tumulong sa yo, yung mga pest control.”

But with no available pest control due to the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine, Lyn's nursing her chipped heart and learning that termites don't like light apparently. — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
