How TikTok videos bring more than just relief to Filipinos in quarantine
For many people, TikTok is a quick and easy way to kill boredom and show off your talents.
But now that everyone is advised to stay home to avoid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho” tried to dig deeper as to why so many Filipinos prefer to pass time on the video sharing platform.

Philip Te Hernandez, who rose to fame as “Boy Bewang” for his hilarious take on the Shakira dance challenge, shared how TikTok opens up a lot of possibilities.
“Doon ko na discover na puwede mo palang gawin ang kahit ano. Puwede kang sumayaw, puwede kang kumanta, puwede mong gayahin ‘yung paborito mong artista… You have the creative freedom. You can be anyone you want to be sa TikTok,” he said.
The content creator, however, revealed that his mom is going through chemo and TikTok is a safe way to pass the time at home, especially with COVID-19 going around.
“Just November last year, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and it was very shocking to everyone,” Philip said.
“Nasa bahay na ako, most of the time, dati kasi i could always go out to work, kailangan mo rin kasi i-consider ‘yung mga kasama mo sa bahay kasi especially na may breast cancer si mama and mas madali siyang dapuan ng sakit kasi she’s undergoing chemo,” he added.

Right now, Philip isn’t the only one in Davao City creating TikTok vids to pass the time.
The Davao City tourism office started an online contest called “#DavaoLetsKulataCovid” wherein families at home can win prizes for participating in various TikTok challenges.
“Para ma-ease 'yung boredom nila while staying at home and also para may activity din for the whole family to do together,” Tourism OIC Regina Rosa Tecson explained.
Philip encouraged more people to try TikTok, especially as much of the country is implementing community quarantine measures amid the current COVID-19 situation in the country.
“If you’re given that option to stay home, consider yourself blessed,” said Philip.
“Siguro just make use of your time na lang siguro para mas makilala ‘yung sarili n'yo better para bond with your family, learn a new skill. May TikTok diyan, puwede kayon mag-showcase ng talent sa TikTok. Ipakita kung ano 'yung kaya n'yong gawin.” --Margaret Claire Layug/MGP, GMA News
