Iconic TV shows that will give you nostalgia
Are you ready for a throwback? Take a stroll down memory lane as we look back on the shows that became part of the lives of young and old Filipinos. Try to see how many of these shows are familiar to you and which one of them you miss the most!
Uncle Bob and the Lucky 7 Club
Before there was Sesame Street, Pinoy kids came to know and love Uncle Bob and his sidekick puppets, Spanky and Pancho. In the early years of television, Saturday mornings were spent watching Uncle Bob’s Lucky 7 club, the first live TV show for children in the Philippines. Robert “Uncle Bob” Stewart was also the founder of GMA Network.
That’s Entertainment
Even before the emergence of reality talent competition shows like Starstruck, Filipinos have long been entertained by variety shows that bring out some of the country’s best performers. Introduced by Kuya Germs, That’s Entertainment became an instant hit when it first aired, as it showcased hardworking production numbers, and paved the way for celebrities to be discovered.
TGIS
When you say 90s love team, there’s no beating Angelu de Leon and Bobby Andrews, or Peachy and Wacks, in the hit TV afternoon show, TGIS. With an all-star teen cast including Dingdong Dantes, Ciara Sotto, and Antoinette Taus, TGIS – or Thank God it’s Sabado – was among the first Pinoy shows made specially for teens. It depicted the story of a high school barkada, and took its viewers on a feels trip with every episode, bringing on the tears, laughter, kilig, and appreciation for the value of friendship.
Filipino television has definitely seen many changes throughout the years. Different kinds of programs have been made for different generations, using the newest emerging technologies, that even the way we watch TV has changed.
Yet despite the many changes, one thing remains the same: TV is an inseparable part of the Filipinos’ way of life. From then until now, GMA continues producing quality shows for viewers of all ages – whether it be news and drama shows for the adults, or morning and cartoon programs for the kids. Shows like TOPPS Sarap TOPPStar TV were made specially for kids, showcasing a variety of performances from talented kids all over the country. The program received the Anak TV Seal Award at the 2019 Anak TV Awards, and also received a Special Citation under the Best Children and Youth Program Category at the 41st Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA).
