If there's one thing that's constant in the holiday season here in the Philippines, it's the Christmas tree. Come November, every home in the country is sure to have one - be it towering and majestic or smaller and more intimate. Building the Christmas tree is also a key bonding moment that further adds to the festive feel of the season.

This year, you should go for greener Christmas trees. DIY Christmas trees made from recyclable materials are more eco-friendly. You don’t have to use plastic to decorate your home. With little creativity, you can get that tree standing in no time.

Also, DIY Christmas trees are affordable. You don’t have to spend hundreds or thousands of cash to have an eye-catching tree these holidays. You can make your own from common items in your household and backyard.

Are you ready to be crafty? Here are three ways to create an eco-and-budget-friendly DIY Christmas tree.

Newspaper Christmas Tree

Materials:

  • Newspaper
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Barbecue stick
  • Cone paper
  • Tree topper
  • Non-toxic spray paint (optional)

Steps:

  1. Cut your newspaper into thick, long strips.
  2. Roll the newspaper strips around the barbecue stick. Use the glue to hold the rolled newspaper in place. Do this for 20 or more times.
  3. Make a star shape using the three newspaper strips and glue them together. This will be your tree’s base.
  4. Place the cone paper in the middle of the star.
  5. Start crossing over the remaining newspaper strips around the cone paper. Do this until you fully cover the cone paper.
  6. Now, decorate your newspaper Christmas tree with the topper. You can also paint it green using a non-toxic spray.
  7. For a bigger tree, make more newspaper strips that you will wrap around a bigger cone paper.

Tissue Paper Roll Christmas Tree

Materials:

  • Toilet paper roll tubes (at least 39 pieces)
  • Christmas balls
  • Ribbon or garland
  • Cardboard sheets
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Steps:

  1. Glue the toilet paper roll tubes onto the cardboard sheets. Make it so that the layers will form a triangle, looking like a tree. This means more tubes at the bottom layer and gradually decreasing to the top layer.
  2. Make sure the tubes on the “trunk” form wide enough to hold the weight of the tree.
  3. Glue the Christmas balls inside each tube. You have to prepare as many balls as the tubes you’ll use.
  4. Tie the ribbon or garland around the Christmas tree.
  5. Place the topper and you’re done.
  6. For a bigger tree, use more tissue paper roll tubes.

Dried twig Christmas Tree

Materials:

  • Dry twigs
  • Craft wire
  • Christmas balls
  • Pliers
  • Glue gun

Steps:

  1. Form a triangle using different sizes of dry twigs.
  2. Secure the main body with three pieces of dry twigs. Attach them to the main body with glue.
  3. Glue the Christmas balls onto the dry twigs for decoration.
  4. For a bigger tree, use larger and longer pieces of dry twigs.

Setting up a Christmas tree for the family doesn't have to be expensive and you also don't have to buy one for every year. Creating one at home can be a fun bonding experience and also a new Christmas tradition that you can do with the family every year.
