Carla Abellana opens up about journey towards freezing her eggs: 'A transformative experience'

Carla Abellana has opened up about her journey towards freezing her eggs as she shared a video of herself during her visits to a fertility clinic in Quezon City.

On Instagram, the Kapuso star posted a series of clips of herself in Conceive IVF Manila Inc., where she could be seen having an ultrasound, receiving some medication and getting her blood extracted. It also showed the actress getting injected in the abdomen.

"I had lost count of how many daily injections I had to endure," the video's caption read. "If at first you don't succeed, try and try again!"

At the end of the video, Carla told her viewers that she has to do another round of injections and tablet medication before she has to go back to the clinic in about three or four months.

Meanwhile, in the caption of her post, she wrote that her journey to freezing her eggs "has been a transformative experience —one that required a lot of research, emotional preparation, and support."

According to Carla, it was crucial to be surrounded with the right team, noting that the first step was having a consultation.

"Medical Director Dr. Ednalyn Ong-Jao explained the process and answered all my questions with much care and expertise. As I prepared, I was amazed by the professionalism and compassion of the entire team," she said.

She added that the nurses made the process easy and reassuring for her, while Dr. Ong-Jao made sure that everything was done with safety and care.

"I’m incredibly grateful to everyone involved—their kindness, support, and expertise made all the difference," she said.

Egg freezing is the medical procedure where a woman's egg cells are extracted and preserved to maintain their health, according to a 2021 episode of "Dapat Alam Mo!"

Gynecologist and Reproductive Medicine Specialist Dr. Ana Belen Ignacio-Alanzuela had said that the option of freezing one's eggs means that women do not have to race against time just so they can have a child.

"Ang pag-harvest is itatapat sa period ng ovulation mo, tas sisipsipin namin 'yung mga itlog sa obaryo mo," said Dr. Ignacio-Alanzuela. "Guided kami ng ultrasound and of course naka anesthesia ka and tapos itatago na natin sa test tube and ifi-freeze na natin 'yun."

In a 2019 "Unang Hirit" report, infertility specialist Dr. Rudie Frederick Mendiola also explained the process of egg freezing. The first step involves the patient getting injectibles (hormones) and drinking the prescribed medicine to enlarge her follicles.

A patient's egg cells are ready to be retrieved once the follicles are enlarged. Upon retrieval, the eggs are then placed in a tank for freezing and preservation.

Carla recently starred in GMA Prime's "Widows' War" alongside Bea Alonzo. The series aired its finale in January.

Carla had said in an interview with GMA News Online that she would go on a well-deserved vacation after "Widows' War" ends.
