Breast cancer: 3 tips for reducing risk, early detection

Breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide, but it's also one of the most curable when detected early.

According to the Asian Breast Center, breast cancer is the top cancer among Filipinas, with over 27,000 diagnosed with it in 2020 alone.

During Sunday's Pink Parade attended by Kapuso stars Heart Evangelista and Kyline Alcantara, Dr. Kelly Salvador, an oncologist and member of the Philippine Cancer Society, gave three tips to help reduce the risk of breast cancer and detect it early among women.

1. Keep a healthy weight

Salvador said being physically active helps prevent breast cancer.

"Sa mga seniors, even those who are young, at least 30 to 45 minutes of walking every day is advisable," he said.

The oncologist also noted that jogging can harm those with heart conditions, so he highly advises brisk walking instead, especially for seniors or those who are 60 years old and above.

2. Limit junk food, alcohol, stress

Salvador stressed the importance of a diet rich in vegetables and fruits in preventing breast cancer. These foods are packed with essential nutrients and antioxidants that can help reduce cancer risk.

"Bawas bawasan ang pagkain ng junk food, red meat, and animal fats," he said.

He also advised to limit the consumption of alcohol, if you can't get rid of it completely, as well as limiting stress by investing in self-care activities.

3. Do regular self-checks

Last but not least, Salvador encourages women to do regular self-check for breast cancer.

"For the young ladies, pre-menopausal, one week after your menstrual period, try to do your breast self-examination," he said.

"Normally, you should not feel anything there, but if you do, try to see a doctor," he added.

Remember, early detection is your best defense against breast cancer. Make regular examinations, including self-checks, a priority in your health routine.

For women in their 40s, it is generally recommended to get breast cancer screening every year.

In June, PhilHealth started offering free breast cancer screening, such as ultrasound and mammogram services, under its Konsulta package.

Those who wish to avail themselves of the PhilHealth Konsulta Package may register with their PhilHealth Konsulta provider of choice.
