Mother with vision impairment undergoes surgeries thanks to GMA Kapuso Foundation

A mother who suffers from a vision impairment has undergone a cataract surgery and a retina surgery thanks to the GMA Kapuso Foundation.

According to a report on "24 Oras," Monday, Liberty Salimbagat was left by her husband and children after her she lost her eyesight back in 2016.

Since then, a friend named Melinda took care of her. Due to the expensive treatment she will need for her eyes, they reached out to the GMA Kapuso Foundation for help.

Liberty first got a checkup from Asian Eye Institute and underwent surgery. She had a surgery again from the Ophthalmological Foundation of the Philippines.

"Kay Liberty, cataract surgery plus 'yung tinatawag natin na retina surgery. 'Yung inooperahan 'yung retina kasi dun nga 'yung damage sa diabetes 'di ba," said Dr. Cheryl Arcinue, ophthalmologist at the Asian Eye Institute.

"We had to peel or tatanggalin mo isa isa yung mga membrane. Tapos nilaser yung retina niya which what we usually do for patients with advanced diabetic retinopathy."

Now, Liberty's eyesight has been partially restored after the operations.

"Medyo nakakita na ako, nakakaaninag pero malabo pa rin. Pero ang good news po sa nag-opera na doctor, malaki po ang improvement," she said.

Currently, she is still getting treatment and recovering to prepare for her next surgery for her left eye.

Aside from the operations, GMA Kapuso Foundation treated Liberty and Melinda to a makeover to improve their self-confidence.
